Tips and Tricks for Posing in Photos

Tips and Tricks for Posing in Photos

Whether you’re a seasoned model or are simply looking for the best angles to take a selfie, knowing how to pose for photos is a lot more difficult than many think it is. We’ve all been there, asking someone to take a few photos of us only to find that we hated every single one. Some aspects of bad photos are hard to avoid, such as terrible lighting or someone who doesn’t know how to turn the flash on, but there are plenty of ways to make a photo infinitely better with a few simple posting tips.

Both models and influencers alike have experience with a full team of photographers and stylists to ensure a photo shoot comes out incredible, but they’re also used to having to turn their homes into temporary studios when creating their own content. It’s important to note that the trick to better photos does not include weight loss or a new skin care regime, but can be as simple as finding the right light! You do not need to look like a different person to make a photo incredible, you just need to know which side is your best. Let’s get started!

Know Your Angles

It’s important to differentiate the best angles when taking a full body photo vs. a head/face shot. The best angles for a bull body shot, aim to have the camera set just below your eye level, pointed slightly upward. This will give you long lines, not to mention make you look nice and tall!

For a face shot, consider taking the shot from above. It will give the angles of your face more definition, and avoid any concern you may have for your face to look bigger than you wish it to.

Headshots are usually more formal, so a straight on shot is usually a better option. However, for any photo, your best bet is to play around! Take a few test shots to determine which angle is best for you and your unique body shape. It’s all about making sure you have plenty of options, and finding that sweet spot that gives you the photo you’re looking for.

Good Posture

We’ve been told not to slouch our whole lives, but for photos, it’s a must to have good posture! Not only will standing up straight exemplify the best parts of your body shape, but it will make you look confident, strong, and inspiring.

However, you shouldn’t confuse standing up straight with being rigid. Make sure your body is relaxed, your eyes are relaxed, and you feel at ease. Otherwise you risk looking unnatural, too stiff, or uncomfortable.

Check Your Lighting

Finding the right lighting can be a real challenge. If you’ve ever spent time on a set of any kind, you can relate to how long and difficult it can be to figure out lighting when you already know what you’re doing.

If you’re using natural light, make sure you are turning your face towards the light. It will brighten your face, make you glow, and if you’re struggling with blemishes, it actually helps make them disappear!

You should always have extra lighting options on hand- we don’t realize how easily we can get washed out. The ring light has become a must-have amongst influencers, artists, models, creators and actors alike. It surrounds your face with the lighting you need for any photo or video, and bonus, you can find one pretty much anywhere.

Take Lots of Photos

Most of us are not professional photographers or models, which means we don’t always have access to the high tech, fancy equipment to make us look pristine. But that can be solved by experimenting with lots of angles, lots of lighting styles, and taking a lot of photos. You’ll learn quickly what works and what doesn’t, and you’ll also find the best ways that work for you when taking photos on your own.

Find Inspiration

Following creators who are talented at taking their own photos is a great way to get inspired to make your own looks. It can help you figure out which poses are best for your body shape, your style, and can help you determine which looks are best for on-camera. One thing many people struggle with is finding a look that represents both their identity and personal style, but unfortunately not everything looks good on camera. Experiment with patterns and styles to find what works best for you!

Don’t Be Afraid to Shake Things Up

Finding your good side can be tough, so when we do it’s common to want to use it for everything. But don’t be scared to try something new! As you experiment you will continue to find new things that work for you be they poses, colors, patterns or lighting styles. Go up on your tiptoes for a photo, use the flash/no flash, mix up your patterns, mix up your lighting, whatever you want to try, don’t be afraid to try.

The most important thing to remember is to never stop creating, trying, and experimenting. You’ll be surprised what you learn about yourself!
